Beam Family: The Perfect Balance Between Material, Function and Form
09/07/2019 - Brendan Ravenhill Studio presents Beam Family, a new vision of the classic typology of shop lamps.

With the advent of new technology, fluorescent tubes have been replaced by thin strips of high efficiency LEDs. Using those arrays as their jumping off point, the designers from Brendan Ravenhill Studio explored linear manufacturing processes to arrive at their material palette of plywood, extruded aluminum and rolled acrylic. They join and shape these materials into a fixture with angled sides and rounded ends that imply movement and directionality, not simply an elongated rectangle, but a bold graphic line floating in space.

'Once again, Beam came out of client feedback, and the need for a great linear pendant. We’re always looking to diversify our product offerings and answer a need, so the challenge and form factor resonated with us. We set out to design a linear pendant with the same form and honesty of materials as the classic shop lamp, without the associated harsh glare, providing an even, flattering light instead' say from Brendan Ravenhill Studio.

They began their design exploration by researching linear materials to arrive at their material palette of plywood (tree), extruded aluminum (metal beam), and extruded and rolled acrylic (acrylic sheets). These were chosen for their inherent ability to be formed in long, thin sheets.

Pairing these materials with strips of high efficiency LEDs, they created an extruded aluminum heatsink and an acrylic tube that holds two strips of LEDs, angled at 35 degrees from vertical. The acrylic tube is capped at both ends by acrylic hemispheres, creating a unit that directs the most intense parts of the light out toward the shades to be reflected and bounced down, and eliminating hot spots.

Available in 46” and 84” lengths and two finish options, Beam is equally at home in a dining room or a conference suite.

Shades of opal acrylic and oak plywood provide two lighting conditions. In opal, the translucent shades provide a warm, emanating light, while in oak the opaque shades direct light downward. The angled sides and gently rounded ends project light out and imply directionality, not simply a rectangle, but a bold graphic line floating in space. Available in 46” and 84” lengths and two finish options, Beam is equally at home in a dining room or a conference suite.

'We are inspired to create in a world already full of things because we believe that well designed objects embody original ideas.'

Brendan Ravenhill Studio is a design studio that creates narrative through an exploration of material, physics, and craft. Since the founding in 2010, they have designed, manufactured, and assembled all of the lighting fixtures in the USA, working with a community of makers and artists who are the best at what they do, always seeking to master their craft.
